One and only Christmas Knit

Yes, I'm making an Alligator scarf from Morehouse Farm Merino for BHE, in the Everglades colorway. This will be a surprise for Christmas! He saw the ad in one of my magazines a few months back and commented that it was cool. I'm not planning on knitting anything else for Christmas gifts, b/c I know I'll get in over my head. Actually, I may downsize the pattern and knit a couple more for Monkeyboy and Sweetpea. But THAT'S IT!!!

Of course, I forgot to mention the quilts I plan on making each of them.... but time is running out. I have bought all the fabric I need (I think), washed most of it, but before I start quilts, I have to finish Halloween costumes. Those begin tonight! I also had planned on making Christmas stockings for each of us this year, probably quilted.

It is so easy for me to get in over my head, can you tell?

Winter Interweave is up!

Check out the preview of the Winter Interweave Knits! I love so many of these sweaters, and I haven't even started the Tilted Duster from the Fall issue yet - I'd better get cracking on that! My immediate favorites are the Refined Aran Jacket, the BonBon Pullover, and Henley Perfected. Oh, and I like the Gathered Pullover too. And Rosemary's Swing Jacket looks intriguing, but the yarn and photos are dark, so it's hard to see the details. I think my Ravelry queue is going to get even longer when the issue shows up in my mailbox!

More and More

It seems like all I ever post about is my secret pal. Well, that's because every time I turn around, I have another package to open! She truly has spoiled me today. Check out this gorgeous lace weight yarn she dyed! This picture does not do it justice, I'll try to get a better shot in the daylight. I honestly gasped when I opened the package, it is that beautiful. Whatever I make with this will be very special indeed. Maybe something from Victorian Lace Today....

Along with this package I got in the mail today, I was supposed to open the package I received a couple of weeks ago labeled "Local Treats." I think she's from Scotland! This packet had a package of Highland Fudge, a booklet of Scottish recipes, a little bar of vegetable soap in the Heather scent, and a tea towel with all sorts of Scottish words! They are printed on the towel dictionary style, with the pronunciation and definition. I love all of it! I haven't tried the fudge yet - it's late here, and if I have chocolate this late at night, I'll either have some really wild dreams, or be up half the night. I also can't wait to try the soap! Thank you again, Secret Pal!

I had stitch group tonight, and cast on for yet another new project. Details to follow in my next post!

Current Knitting Projects

Well, it's been a while since I gave any sort of knitting update with pictures, and I've started a few new projects! I guess I've had knitter's ADD lately. All of these photos are as of tonight, so this really is current status.

The first photo is of the Debbie Bliss Sailor Collar Cardi. I've sewn almost all the lace edging on, and am to the point that I need to do a lot of tedious work. See all those faint little bumps in the lace panels? Those are bobbles, and should be much more prominent, but they want to be shy and tuck away to the wrong side. I think my solution will be to take some white sewing thread and a needle, and take a little tucking stitch on the wrong side of each bobble to force it to the front side. The problem is there are dozens and dozens of them, on all pieces except the collar. My attention span just isn't up to the task at the moment, which is sort of unusual for me.

When I went on my road trip to Kansas (Did I ever post pictures? If not, I'll do so tomorrow), I needed a good car project. I cast on for the Wrap Cardigan (#18 from Vogue Knitting Holiday 2006) in Elann Peruvian Highland Chunky. I knit the entire back on the trip, and started the right front. Mine will have a hemmed edge rather than letting the stockinette roll. I don't need a big roll of bulky weight stockinette around my hips. I'm also knitting the back one size smaller than the front. My shoulder width is not in proportion to my bust measurement, and I want this to have a more tailored look, less sloppy look than it would if I knit the pieces the same size. I'll adjust the armholes, shoulders and sleeves to all fit together.

One design note about this, half of the fronts are knit in double stranded yarn, and half in single strand, so you use two different size needles to accommodate the different yarns. Dangling needles, and dropping or picking up the extra strand of yarn gets a little fiddly - Is that a word? You know what I mean, I'm sure :)

Finally, I got a little tired of the fiddly-ness of the Wrap Cardigan, so I cast on for Juliet at my knit group Tuesday night. I am using Knitpicks Swish, and I love it! The yarn has been in my stash for a year probably, but I've never knit with it before. I am knitting this one single stranded, rather than double stranded as the pattern calls for. Of course, I had to recalculate the pattern to accommodate my changes. Have you all ever done this before? I thought I was being pretty clever when I figured out an easy way to do that. I did this on Something Red too. The pattern calls for a gauge of 14 stitches to 4 inches. My gauge was 18 stitches to 4". I divided my gauge by the pattern gauge to come up with the ratio I needed to make all my adjustments (18 divided by 14 = 1.28). Then I pick the size I want to knit, multiply the number to cast on by 1.28 to get the number of stitches I need to cast on. I also multiplied the number of increases I needed by this factor. My size called for increasing every other row 22 times, and multiplied by 1.28 I got 28 rows. Like I said, I used this logic on my Something Red, with no problems.
On a non-knitting note, Monkeyboy is over the croup and back to his regular energetic self. Sweetpea has developed a cough, but not a croupy one. My headaches are starting to get better. I am getting them everyday still, but now it seems like they don't start until the afternoon, whatever that means. I'm still having muscle spasms in my back and neck, but them seem to be getting less intense, gradually. I really appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.

The gifts continue....

Check out my latest surprise from my Secret Pal! I heard from her that it was okay to open the Packet labeled #7, plus directions on the remaining packages, so I am all set!

She sent some delicious tea, just perfect because the weather is finally starting to cool down here! Also a coaster, some pretty star buttons, and a dragonfly applique! I love it all! Thanks, Secret Pal!

Thanks Again, Secret Pal!

Today is October 15th, and I get to open another package from my Secret Pal!

Check it out - this is 100% wool roving, loosely plied with a strand of cotton. The colors are absolutely gorgeous, and I can't wait to see what it becomes! The photo is pretty accurate, burgundies, berries, a little orange and brown, and a nice bit of teal. It just speaks of autumn! My roving stash is really starting to grow, I'm going to have to get busy! SP11, I love the colors! Did you dye it yourself?

Also, look at the package I received last week! Actually these are the contents of the package. I am being incredibly patient, and not opening the packages I was instructed to wait until specific dates to open - in my opinion, that's part of the fun! I did open the undated packages, and found an activity folder for the kids (I'm saving it for a day when we really need a cool surprise!), some packets of shampoo and a facial mask, chocolates and biscuits, a great journal with a dragonfly on the cover, and some cool postcard sized monthly calendars with sheep on the front! The still-wrapped packages are labeled surprises #7, 8, and 9, and are dated on when I can open them. They did arrive before surprises #5 and 6. (I hope I haven't lost count - its late, I'm tired, and it's getting a little confusing! There was one dated October 15, but I'm not sure if I should open it now, or wait for packets 5 and 6 to show up....SP11, what should I do?

Quickie

Just a quick post to say sorry I haven't posted pictures yet for those of you waiting. Monkeyboy has a bad case of croup, so we've been busy trying to take care of that. I've started taking muscle relaxers at night for my back and neck, which makes it impossible to stay awake long enough to pull pictures off the camera, etc.

We are both getting better, so hopefully this weekend.....

I'm here

I did come home from Kansas, for those of you wondering. I've been super busy at work this week, plus dealing with headaches and muscle spasms in my back. They've gotten a little bit worse each day, but I am trying to get it taken care of. We have not had a single problem with the insurance company so far. They did end up totalling out our minivan, and gave us a rental to drive until it is settled. We should be getting something new (to us) tomorrow. Fortunately, I seem to be the only one suffering from the accident. Our chiropractor thinks Monkeyboy might have a little bit of problem in his neck, but he's not complaining from anything. I have to wrap this up, I took a pain pill a little bit ago, and its starting to kick in.
I haven't been knitting as much as usual, but the Debbie Bliss cardi is in the seaming stages now. I did knit the back of a cardi for me on the trip - it's chunky weight yarn, so it went really fast.
Tomorrow night - a few pictures from my trip, plus I received another SP package!

Bags Packed, Almost

My annual quilt shop trip begins today! I look forward to this all year, even though I think of myself as a knitter now rather than a quilter. I look forward to the time away with girlfriends, the 3-night slumber party, the good food. And of course hours of knitting in the car while someone else drives! We have gone every year since it started, so this is our ninth year :)

I've packed clothes, camera, ipod, and tons of yarn. Seriously - enough for two sweaters, and then some. I am taking yarn to finish the Sailor Collar Cardi (I'm down to just the edging now), yarn to finish the second sock of another pair of Dancing socks, all the yarn for the Wrap Cardigan from the Holiday 2006 Vogue Knitting (all the yarn because it's knit on size 10 and 11 needles, and I'm sure I'll finish it before the trip is over). And finally, all the yarn for Juliet, because what if the Wrap Cardigan doesn't work out? It won't take long to knit the edging, or finish the sock, and I can't be without a project in the car!!! So I'm sure I'll catch some flak for packing 34+ skeins of yarn (seriously, that does sound ridiculous), but I don't care. I'll hide some in my duffel bag, and they'll never see all of it together ;)

One slight hitch in the plans, I've totally misplaced my size 10 KnitPicks Options needles! I swatched with it for the Wrap Cardi a week ago, and now they are nowhere to be found! I've decided to stop by Hobby Lobby on my way to meet everyone and pick up some Balene circulars. If that doesn't make the others turn up, I'll order replacements from KnitPicks. That will make them show up for sure!

Thanks Secret Pal!

Remember the packages I got from my Secret Pal a few weeks ago? Well, I've been eyeing them every day, watching the calender, waiting for October 1st to get here. Lo and behold, October arrived and I didn't even think of the packages until my SP emailed me to see how I liked them. (I have a good reason for forgetting - my family and I were rear-ended Sunday afternoon :( Everyone is fine, there were no injuries other than a little soreness & stiffness. Our car however, did not fair so well. The damage to the back end was pretty significant, and we are waiting to see what the insurance company does. We halfway expect them to total it out.)

Anyway, back to business! My secret pal sent me a wonderful skein of yarn, in gorgeous medium and dark teals, with the tiniest bit of deep plum thrown in. It just happens to match a skirt and blouse I wore yesterday! The yarn is Colinette JitterBug, and the colorway is Jay. She also sent a Lucy Neatby sock pattern called Fiesta Feet, which calls for a variegated yarn and a solid yarn. I think I have just the yarn in my stash for it! But wait, there's more! She also sent a pattern for Entrelac Socks from MenKnit e-zine! (Scroll down to page 16.) It calls for six different colors of sock yarns, so it will be great for using up all my leftovers! Plus, I can finally learn Entrelac!

Thank you Secret Pal, you're fantastic, and I love them all!
